How the math works
This calculator determines the total surface area of your project. For walls, it calculates the perimeter — 2 × (length + width) — and multiplies it by the wall height. If you include the ceiling, it adds the ceiling area (length × width). It then subtracts the area of standard doors (20 ft²) and windows (15 ft²). Finally, it divides the total area by the area of your chosen drywall sheet size (e.g., 32 ft² for a 4x8 sheet) and adds a 15% waste factor to give you a realistic number of sheets to purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there a 15% waste factor?
Cutting drywall to fit around outlets, corners, and other obstacles creates waste. It's an industry standard to add 10-15% to your total square footage to ensure you don't run out of material mid-project. This calculator includes a 15% buffer automatically.
Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 sheets?
4x8 sheets (32 sq ft) are lighter and easier to handle for one person. 4x12 sheets (48 sq ft) are heavier but cover more area faster and result in fewer seams to tape and mud, which can save a lot of finishing work. For walls taller than 8 feet, 12-foot sheets are often preferred to avoid horizontal seams.
Does this calculator work for ceilings?
Yes. You can select "Walls + Ceiling" at the top. The calculator will then add the ceiling's square footage (length × width) to the total wall area before calculating the number of sheets required.
What about different drywall thicknesses (1/2", 5/8")?
Drywall thickness doesn't affect the surface area calculation. 1/2" is standard for most residential walls and ceilings, while 5/8" (Type X) is a fire-resistant drywall often required by code for garages and multi-family dwellings. Choose the thickness based on your project's requirements, not the area.
